About the Institute of Bankers in South Africa

The Institute of Bankers is a non-profit company, founded in 1904 with a proud history. We are also the sole professional body recognised by the South Africa Qualifications Authority (SAQA) in the Banking industry in South Africa.

The Vision of the Institute is to be an industry capacity builder, through certification and support of bankers. An integrator of professional ethics, conduct and a facilitator of Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

We see the need to further professionalise the industry and to respond to the changing needs of the world of work. We have commenced collaborations with, amongst others, the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB) (Scotland, Nigeria & Zimbabwe), FINSIA (Australia) and aim to expand this going forward. The CIB have offered two free courses which are available on our website (“Foundation course in Green and Sustainable Finance” and “Vulnerable customers online course”).

We believe that collaborating with international institutes will add value to our members as they strive to navigate the changing world of work. In addition to our Memberships, Designations, CPD, Webinars and Shared content, we also administer National Credit Act (NCA) exams for the motor industry and provide Critical Skills letters for foreign nationals wishing to apply to Home Affairs to work in South Africa.

Our medium to long-term goal is to contribute to Bankseta’s research around competencies required in the South African banking environment as well as the certification of bankers.
