Human Resource Management learnership

Chartall Business College is a multi-faceted private training provider. Historically our core market has been corporate, where we offered training or RPL to businesses with a specific training need. Recently we branched out into the internship market and we have successfully run a number of programmes for unemployed youth.

Our most recent project is for a qualification in Human Resource Management and we have 11 learners participating in this programme. These learners were all unemployed school leavers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The programme was split into two parts. The first six months was academic, where the learners attended classroom training and completed a portfolio of evidence. The second component was earmarked for workplace experience where the learners would be exposed to the world of work, learn the meaning of work ethics and develop real work-related skills. The combination of the two means that these learners would complete their 12-month programme with a recognised qualification and actual work experience.

There are small incentives for companies that support these programmes, however, to my dismay I found the process of finding workplace sites very challenging. We thought companies would embrace the opportunity to assist unemployed youth in gaining skills that could lead to permanent employment, but this was not the case. This may be a bit of a generalisation, but employers proved reluctant to take responsibility for learners in their workplace because they will be required to ensure that the learners get meaningful work to do. Due to the learners lack of work experience, employers can find this time consuming and frustrating (as well as disruptive in the workplace), and this is understandable.

We persevered in marketing our interns and we are proud that all 11 interns have been placed and are doing well in their respective workplaces.
